Why a retired amercian couple retired in Costa Rica after visiting Lake Atitlan decided to move here..

Jeanne shares with us her experience of acquiring a piece of land, build a house and life in Lake Atitlan.

If you have a car, bus, minivan or bike you have until the 31st of August to change it.
To know where is your card go to gt then to the page
after that fill the form starting with NIT which is your identification tax number, the type of plaque you have most probably P of Particular, your plaque number and then the catcha text.
Then you will see the characteristics of your car, how much tax you have to pay,where to pick up your new circulation card.
To get the new card you need
1- to bring the original card you have.

2- Paid your yearly circulation tax.



3- Original and copy of your Guatemalan ID card either the good old cedula or your new DPI.



This change has no cost.
But if you don't do it and you checked on the road you might have to pay fine and more

This information is of the most interes for the foreigners who lives in Guatemala and mostly for the ones who have decided to retire here. Mostly because of not knowing the language we don't follow the national news. So in our particular case let say you know by now that if you have a car in Guatemala with Guatemalan plaques you have every year to get the circulation sticker. It is a tax specifically for motor vehicle (its applies also for bicycle and boat) and you pay it at the bank. Upon payment your receive the new sticker and you put it on the upper right side of your windshield. Better to remove the old ones so you don't limit your view. In order to pay your  new sticker you have first to consult if you have ticket (could be parking ticket or speed ticket the most common, as now in some areas the transit police do control speed with handheld speedometer). Check these sites Web page to check if you have speed ticket in Guatemala City,  in Mixco City (Right side of the web site under Solvenci de transito) and Villa nueva (left side of the wed site under remissiones). These 3 cities are the ones where you most probably can get a ticket. If you have a ticket or several you have to pay them in order to be able to get the sticker.
